Jeremy Renner Panel - SVCC 2016

Jeremy Renner Panel

Silicon Valley Comic Con
San Jose Convention Center

March 19, 2016

The biggest draw for my initial interest in attending Silicon Valley Comic Con was Jeremy Renner’s appearance.  His panel was before Nathan Fillion’s panel so I was going to have a very busy day (and my camera battery was about dead near the end of the costume contest).

Jeremy Renner

I saw a lot of “press” reporting on Jeremy’s interest in having a Hawkeye series on Netflix, which annoyed me somewhat.  A fan asked a question if he would be interested in a stand alone movie or series.  Jeremy answered that he would and thinks the Netflix format would be good.  It wasn’t answered as something he’s pursuing as much as he’s open to playing the character more, and it doesn’t seem to matter what the project is.

Jeremy Renner

The next day, while waiting in line for the Con Man panel, the people behind me were talking about Jeremy’s answer to a fan question which was how Stephen Amell had said that the Arrow could beat Hawkeye at anything (not just archery).  Jeremy just laughed and said that he was happy that he (Amell) thinks his fictional character could beat another fictional character.  He just left it at that, and one of the ladies behind me thought that Jeremy wasn’t “fun” for saying that.  I didn’t butt in, but I felt (and still feel) that when your first breakout role is playing Jeffrey Dahmer you wouldn’t give much credence to the characters you play.  How else do you stay sane after playing a serial killer, a neo-Nazi skinhead, bank robber, etc.  Jeremy Renner has had some very intense roles so why would he care if one of them could be another actor’s character at anything?   Honestly, I felt his answer was very “safe,” and he did mention that he doesn’t watch TV or movies so he’s not into pop culture in that way.

Jeremy Renner listening carefully to a fan

One girl told him it was her birthday, and Jeremy ran off the stage to give her a hug.  After which, she had a hard time collecting herself to finish asking her question (understandable!!), and Jeremy mentioned he would check IDs for any others saying it’s their birthday.

It was my first time seeing Jeremy Renner at a convention, and I wasn’t disappointed.  He seems very down to earth in a way that’s seems “blue collar” as in hard-working and not being frivolous.  He also has the most adorable giggle.

Con Man Panel - SVCC 2016

Con Man Panel

Silicon Valley Comic Con
San Jose Convention Center

March 20, 2016

The Con Man panel at Silicon Valley Comic Con was fun even though I had seen the artwork and heard about the upcoming game app at Long Beach Comic Expo last month, because Nathan Fillion was at this one!!

Alan Tudyk, Nathan Fillion, and PJ Haarsma

I had attended Nathan’s panel the previous day, but I’m recapping out of order for this convention.  Alan and Nathan signed Con Man mouse pads (also available for purchase unsigned at the Con Man booth on the exhibition floor) to the fans who asked questions.

I had “applied” to volunteer at their booth, but I wasn’t selected.  I was able to see more panels and walk the exhibition floor since I wasn’t manning the booth, so it all worked out.

Key points:

1. Con Man dvd is coming soon for those who chose that option when they backed the crowdfunding, but no word on availability for general sale.

2. The Con Man game app will launch in July at or around San Diego Comic Con.

3. Season 2 of Con Man starts shooting in June, and they should have footage available for San Diego Comic Con (this came from my conversation with PJ Haarsma at the Con Man booth).

I’ll be posting more recaps of the different panels, the exhibition floor, and my overall experience attending Silicon Valley Comic Con soon.

I honestly don’t remember much from Nathan Fillion’s panel at Silicon Valley Comic Con except that I had terrible seats.  He was fun and charming! Here are a few of the photos I took during the panel.

FBF: Godzilla Premiere

Godzilla Premiere

Hollywood, CA

May 8, 2014

I’ve always loved Godzilla, and grew up watching it because my younger brother was always watching it. (I’ll admit that there was a time when I hated Godzilla, but only because I was sick of having to watch it every weekend.)  I have a few friends who really, really love Godzilla, one of whom had told me over a year before the film’s release that I was to invite him (even though he lives in San Diego) to the premiere if I got passes.  Unfortunately, he notified me a day or so before the premiere that he wasn’t going to be able to go.  Two other Godzilla-loving friends couldn’t go, but then the day before the premiere, one said he could.  I had extra passes so I could bring 3 people, so the Munchkins’ parents both came as well as another friend.

The premiere was being held inside the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, and I left work early because I wanted to be able to walk around and take pictures of the setup before having to get in line.

They had special popcorn boxes for the premiere so I ate 2 boxes of popcorn so I could save the boxes for my friend, Chris, in San Diego.  Interestingly, I later won passes to a screening of Godzilla which included an after-party.  We got some swag at that screening which included a Godzilla T-shirt, light sticks with the Godzilla logo, posters, etc.  The friend who went with me to that screening wasn’t a Godzilla fan so she got the shirt in a size to fit Chris for me to give him.

Box of popcorn and my ticket
The premiere was fun, and I really like the movie and I’m impatient for the next one.  If they have a premiere in Los Angeles, I will have to get passes because I don’t think Chris will want to miss a Godzilla premiere again.

Live with Kelly & Michael After Oscar Show Taping 2016

Live with Kelly and Michael After Oscar Show
February 29, 2016
Hollywood, CA

On this day two weeks ago, I was sitting in the Dolby Theatre for the "Live with Kelly & Michael" Post Oscar show taping. This was the second consecutive year in which I went to the very, very early "taping" of the L"ve with Kelly & Michael" Post Oscar Show at the Dolby Theatre.  I think I got my ticket back in November, possibly, early December, of 2015.  I saw a tweet from 1iota, who handles the ticketing for the show, and immediately grabbed myself a ticket.

My spot in line in the Hollywood Bowl parking lot
My spot in the Priority Line

2:30am - We had to stop in the tunnels heading to the shuttle area.

My check-in time was no later than 3:30am at the Hollywood Bowl parking lot.  I had a priority ticket, which accounts for the early check-in time, but I wanted to get a good seat so I intended on getting there around 1:30.  I think I actually arrived about 1:45-2am, but the priority line wasn't too long.  Unlike last year, it was quite a bit warmer, though still cool being the middle of the night, so I wasn't freezing while we stood outside for hours.  They scanned our tickets and gave us wristbands, then they had us walk over to the buses/shuttles where we sat for another 30 minutes to an hour. While I was on the bus, I got a text from a friend who was also there, and on another bus, and I was thinking about trying to catch up with her when we got to the Hollywood & Highland Center.

Waiting on the bus
The buses finally took us to the Hollywood & Highland Center and dropped us off to wait another 20 minutes outside while everyone went through bag check and metal detectors.  We were then placed in lines according to our wristband colors inside the Dolby Theatre's lobby areas. We waited in the lobby until about 5:30am.  I had decided not to try to find my friend, because being a "single" can work in your favor for getting a better seat, and boy did it!!

A few lines inside the Dolby Theatre Lobby
You can see the view from my initial seat in the Parterre Center section, and a few minutes later, they started pulling my entire row to the Orchestra Left section, but stopped just a few people ahead of me as they had filled that area...except for a few single seats.  I said I was a "single" and they sent me to the second row of the Orchestra Left section, and my new seat was on the center aisle. SCORE!!!  On the ticket, they advise you to dress as if you were going to a nice dinner, to wear bright colors, no white or logos.  I decided to wear a nice bright green dress.

The view from my original seat - it actually is closer than it looks
They started the show a bit early since they go live at 6am, but Brie Larson had to hop on a plane to get back to Vietnam (where she's shooting Kong: Skull Island) so they pre-taped her segment.  If you saw the show or watch any clips of that interview, the people Brie talks to about her seat were in my row.

Taping this show is a blast even when you're operating on no sleep.  After the show, the fog had rolled in, but instead of waiting in a very long line to get on the buses back to the Hollywood Bowl, I decided to walk to my car.  My friend managed to get on the first or second bus going out, and we both arrived at the parking lot around the same time.  I bumped into her as we were going to our cars.  She said she saw me on the monitors during the show, and the dress helped.

If you are in the Los Angeles area during the Oscars, I recommend getting the free tickets to the "taping" of this show as the stage is still decorated for the Oscars and it's gorgeous!
