Captain America: Civil War Premiere

Captain America: Civil War Premiere banner under the Dolby Theatre sign at the Hollywood and Highland Center

My original intention of “camping” out along the fan barricades was to take pictures of the celebrities, but about a month before the premiere I decided to try and get something signed for a friend’s son, Ryan, who is battling cancer.  Ryan recently turned 18, but has been battling Myelodysplastic Syndrome since January 2015.  MDS is a secondary cancer which was caused by the chemotherapy he underwent when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the age of 3.  The family was originally told that Ryan would not survive surgery to remove the tumor for 4 years when a doctor used an unconventional surgical approach to remove the tumor.  Ryan had a bone marrow transplant thanks to his sister, Bailey, being a perfect match.  Ryan relapsed from the transplant and continues to fight.  Ryan is a huge Marvel fan, and I wanted to try and get as many signatures as I possibly could for him.  I reluctantly told my friend about my plan because I wanted to use a picture of Ryan for the sign, and I wasn’t comfortable doing so without his permission.

I usually place myself on the street near where the stars exit their vehicles, but this time I decided to place myself along the barricades inside the Hollywood and Highland Center.  This turned out to be a huge mistake as the stars were rushing to get inside the Dolby Theatre and didn’t do much, if any signing.  I would have had a better chance arriving earlier and placing myself on the street.

That being said, I did get the Captain America jacket signed by Nick Blood from Agents of SHIELD.  I was also able to get a few pictures, though they aren’t very good because the carpet was extremely crowded with people.  I was on the lookout for Tom Holland, but I never saw him on the carpet.

A few days ago, Grossmont High School ASB led a campaign to try and get any or all of the Marvel stars to meet Ryan.  They also held a huge rally for Ryan, and Chris Evans had recorded a message for Ryan which they played at the rally.  It was the first time Ryan had been on campus for a year due to his illness.

The Huntsman: Winter's War Premiere

I had already seen The Huntsman: Winter’s War at a screening the previous Saturday, but premieres can be a lot of fun and this was no exception.  We were placed into the fan pit about 20 minutes prior to the star arrivals, and we were given Ice Queen masks and Evil Queen crowns to wear.

My semi-obstructed view of the press area of the red carpet

I didn’t have a very good view of the carpet from my spot because of the large “poster” on my left.  There was a family near me, and I helped the daughter who was about 8-10 years old get pictures taken with the stars.

I was successful in all my attempts except with Emily Blunt, who wasn’t taking pictures with anyone as far as I could see.

When Charlize Theron was in front of us, I yelled “Charlize!”  really loud and she looked right at me.  I paused for half a second, then pointed to my right and asked, “Could you take a picture with her?”  She looked to where I was pointing and smiled as she walked over to the little girl and took a selfie with her.  I have to say that Charlize Theron is exceptionally stunning in person.  Just, wow.

I also managed to get Chris Hemsworth and Jessica Chastain to take selfies with the little girl.  She was too shy to yell for the celebs so I was just trying to help her out.  I’m so glad we were successful.  The truth is that celebs are much, much more inclined to sign and/or take pictures with kids at premieres because there are so few kids there.

We were given our tickets pretty late and I didn’t get to my seat in the balcony until after the movie began, and it was so dark that I couldn’t see the seat, forget the seat number, I couldn’t find where to sit so I wouldn’t fall.

I noticed one of Freya’s (Emily Blunt) costumes on display near the restrooms when I came down the stairs from the balcony.  I quickly took a picture before leaving the premiere.

I ended up seeing this movie three times at advance screenings as I won guaranteed seats for another screening the following week.  At that screening, they had a few trivia questions, and I won a poster and a $25 Fandango gift card.

I enjoyed this film so much more than its predecessor.  What did you think?

Jungle decor and signage for the Jungle Book red carpet

The setup for The Jungle Book premiere was not very fan friendly, but I managed to plant myself in a spot which had a view of the red carpet.  Unfortunately, many of the big stars from the film, Idris Elba, Bill Murray, and Scarlett Johansson to name a few, were not in attendance.

I had already seen the film the previous Saturday at a special advance screening in Anaheim and was really looking forward to seeing everyone from the film.

I still have yet to see Idris Elba at an event, but I am determined to make it happen someday!
