Classic Comic Con 2016: Battlestar Galactica Panel

The Battlestar Galactica panel was the reason I wanted to attend Classic Comic Con in Modesto.  There was also a special on the tickets which I couldn't pass up.  The panel was to be a mini-reunion of cast members from the original series airing from 1978-1979.  The guests were Dirk Benedict (Lieutenant Starbuck), Sarah Rush (Flight Corporal Rigel), Herbert Jefferson, Jr. (Lieutenant Boomer), Anne Lockhart (Lieutenant Sheba), and Jack Stauffer (Lieutenant Bojay).

Richard Hatch was scheduled to appear at the convention, but had to cancel last minute for medical reasons.  The convention was able to schedule Anne Lockhart in his stead.  Richard Hatch attends many conventions in and around Los Angeles so I'll be able to see him several times over.  I really love Anne Lockhart and was a fan of her mom's as well.

There were some fun moments between the cast members, especially this hug between Herbert Jefferson, Jr. and Dirk Benedict.  The hug was a result of Dirk saying he didn't have a tv growing up so Herbert got up to give him a hug.

Some interesting trivia is that the role of Lieutenant Sheba was written for Anne Lockhart by Glen A. Larson, but there were still other actresses "up for the part" for quite awhile before she got the final okay.  This was because the studio or network wanted to look at other actresses for the part.  Anne and Dirk actually worked together prior to Battlestar when she was only 18 years old.

Jack Stauffer has spent much of his career playing characters who die on various television shows in the 1970s and 80s.

Classic Comic Con 2017 will move to the end of October for 2017 and tickets are on sale now.  I won't be able to make it for 2017 because it's the same weekend as Stan Lee's Los Angeles Comic Con.

Westworld Red Carpet Premiere

Westworld Premiere
TCL Chinese Theatre Imax
Hollywood, California
September 28, 2016

Westworld scene placed at red carpet entrance at the Westworld premiere in Hollywood.
This is where the guests entered the red carpet.
The Westworld red carpet premiere was held September 28, 2016 at the historic TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, California.  I still have yet to watch the show, but I'm slowly but surely catching up on blog posts.  I hope you all enjoy the pictures.  With only a partial street closure, I was taking photos from across the street and hoping a truck or bus wouldn't get in the way.  Of course, they did!

Westworld Red Carpet Premiere
This turned slowly, and I wish I could have seen it up close.
It was actually quite amusing when the autograph hounds next to me were screaming "Rodrigo" for someone who was most definitely NOT Rodrigo Santoro (this man was also about 8 inches shorter than Rodrigo).  I wondered, ever so briefly, if I should say anything to them, but decided to let them make fools of themselves.  They were only there to make money on any autographs they obtained.  Honestly, there weren't really any fans there, just passersby who wanted to see "famous people" and the autograph hounds.

Only a few of the celebs crossed the traffic (LAPD were onsite to stop traffic for them to cross) to sign autographs. Unfortunately for me, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Ben Barnes, and Ed Harris were not in attendance.

I still have another red carpet premiere to post, and it was a big one!  Come back soon to see what it was.

Emmy Awards 2016 - Red Carpet Bleachers

Emmy Awards 2016
Red Carpet Bleachers Experience

I won a seat in the fan bleachers for the Emmys red carpet on an extremely hot day in Los Angeles.  Thankfully, the organizers provided us with plenty of water (see the cute Emmy labels on the bottles!)  They didn't allow "professional" cameras so I couldn't use my DSLR, and most of the photos I took were on my very old and crappy point and shoot.  The bleachers were semi-shaded so it kept the direct sun off us, but it was still very hot.  They also loosened the dress code for us due to the high temperatures, so I was able to wear shorts (but added a sequined tee to dress it up a bit).

I would guess that only about half of the celebs in attendance walked to the end of the red carpet where the bleachers were placed.  Tom Hiddleston didn't come to our end, and must have gone straight into the Microsoft Theater from the media/interview section.

I was the only person to go crazy for Michelle Dockery, Gina Torres (everyone else was screaming for Laurence Fishburne), and the Sherlock (BBC) production team of Steven Moffat and Sue Vertue.

Most of the celebs were rushing to get into the theater by the time they reached the bleachers section (we were at the very end of the red carpet), so it was really difficult to get good pictures.

A few did stop for selfies, notably the Stranger Things kids and Jon Voight.  Gwendoline Christie did some fun poses for us, which was fun.

I really hope I get to sit in the bleachers for the Emmys again, and I'll be upgrading my point-and-shoot camera very soon!   At the very least, I was able to cross off one more awards show from my bucket list (see my previous posts about the Oscars red carpet).

Long Beach Comic Con 2016 - Overview

Long Beach Comic Con
Long Beach Convention Center
September 17, 2016

This little girl's Xenomorph cosplay is on point at LBCC 2016
I love this little girl's Xenomorph costume!
I was only able to attend one day of Long Beach Comic Con so this is a partial overview.  Long Beach Comic Con seems to be growing each year, and this year the line to check-in was insanely long.  It meandered and double- or triple-backed around the outside "esplanade" and into the parking structure (where is also double-backed), but I probably spent about 45 minutes in line.  I thought it was going to be much worse.  There were no staff or volunteers to direct or organize the line so it was the attendees doing the job until you got near the doors of the convention center.  At the doors, and inside the building there were finally staff/volunteers to direct the line to the various windows for pre-purchased tickets and for those who were buying onsite.

I feel that the use of wristbands instead of badges cause the check-in process to take much longer because, if like me, you purchased a weekend ticket, they supply you with two wristbands.  This also requires you to put Sunday's wristband somewhere where it will not get lost or damaged.  The use of wristbands also causes a "traffic" jam when people walk away from the check-in window, because everyone is trying to put their wristbands on before they can proceed any further into the building.

Little predator cosplay at LBCC 2016
This little predator is actually the sibling to the Xenomorph.
I walked around the exhibition floor for a bit until it was time to get in line for the Con Man and Firefly panels.

I really like a lot of the cosplays, but didn't get very many pictures as it was soooo crowded!  I did my best, though.

Video Game play at LBCC 2016
Gaming area
This gaming area seemed relaxing, which strikes me as a little odd.  Shouldn't it be exciting?  Maybe it was just because it wasn't as crowded in that area of the exhibition floor as in other parts.

I had purchased a 2-day Long Beach Comic Con ticket a few months in advance, but about a week before the convention, I won a seat in the bleachers for the Emmys Red Carpet on the Sunday of the convention (post on the Emmys to come, I promise!).

I hope to see you all back at the Long Beach Convention Center in February for Long Beach Comic Expo.  I've already purchased my 2-day ticket for Long Beach Comic Expo in February on a Goldstar.com Black Friday offer I just couldn't pass up.  The Goldstar offer was much better than the Black Friday deal Long Beach Comic Expo was offering.  Goldstar has discounted tickets available, and I whole-heartedly recommend using them to get your tickets.

Long Beach Comic Con 2016 - Firefly Panel

Firefly Panel

September 17, 2016

Adam Baldwin and Nathan Fillion at the Firefly Reunion panel at LBCC 2016

The Firefly panel during Long Beach Comic Con was a mini-reunion.  Alan Tudyk wasn't at the convention because he was busy with wedding stuff (he was getting married the following Saturday).

Jewel Staite and Sean Maher at the Firefly reunion panel at LBCC 2016

I had some difficulty getting any decent photos since there was someone in front of me with a tripod recording video then taking photos manually.  The tripod was in my line of sight for Summer and Jewel, and Nathan was next to the podium.  I really have to say that I hate the lighting at Long Beach Convention Center.  They use reddish filters on the lights and the stage has too many dark areas.  Adam was in a dark spot at the furthest end of the stage from where I was, and he was wearing a baseball-style hat which block even more light from his face.

Summer Glau (I don't remember what this reaction was about.)
I think the funniest moment was Jewel's reaction to the mention of fan fiction in which her character, Kaylee, and Adam's, Jayne were "involved."  She was visibly disgusted at the thought.  Either she or someone else mentioned that he (Adam/Jayne) was a like a brother so any romantic interaction just felt gross and wrong.

I wish the panel was longer as I could listen to their stories forever, and it's so rare to get this many of the cast members together.
